In più ho apprezzato la fine del nonno ma mi sarebbe piaciuto ci fosse in qualche modo un suo ruolo un po’ più decisivo nella storia e non rimanesse invece così marginale, nonostante assuma parte rilevante nei racconti del passato.

He's being ridiculous. He's asking for ten times what it's worth just because you're wearing your uniform. Let's move on."Shinjuku itself is in a constant state of flux in the novel, being reshaped, replacing the Ginza as the entertainment-heart of the city, and becoming more vibrant (and less seedy) with the expansion of the local trains stations -- which also brings more interest from outsiders, including gangsters.

If I had been there I would have freeze-frame that moment when Edward was desperately trying to please his wife. I would hold the still photograph against my chest and sigh a thousand times as I revel the comical scene with a slight smile on my face. The only reason I carried on reading was because I'd taken the book on holiday and had nothing else to do that day! The Sheltering Rain is a fine little panorama of its place and time -- and changing times -- with an appealing cast of characters from that scene. I liked all of the characters in this book and would have enjoyed spending more time with them. I especially would have liked reading more about Joy and Edward's life when they were first married and living in Hong Kong. That portion of the book reminded me of 'The Painted Veil' by M Somerset Maugham.Joy, her daughter Kate, and her 16-year-old granddaughter Sabine are quite human (sometimes frustratingly so) as they try to understand themselves and their relationships with one another. This is not a plot-driven novel; it is one of character in which there are some lovely and strongly emotional scenes, and the author’s writing about horses and the Irish countryside is absolutely beautiful.
